Northeast TN Adventures

Johnson County is outdoor adventure territory with so many protected natural resources that provide for many types of exciting adventures, including hiking, biking, fishing, ATV touring, and motorcycle touring. The world famous Appalachian Trail runs through our area providing all levels of hiking abilities. We are the home to Doe Mountain Family Wilderness Area that has 8,600 acres of protected mountain terrain.  Our area has pristine Watauga Lake that is mostly protected from development, which contributes to this being the third cleanest lake in the America. We are also home to the Snake 421 Motorcycle Route, which is one of the best motorcycle routes in the world. Whatever outdoor adventure you are seeking, you need to plan your family or group vacation in beautiful North East Tennessee.  Our Log Cabin Rentals are right in the middle of all of the Adventures.


Hiking

Johnson county and bordering Carter County is home to some of the best hiking in Eastern United Sates. We have hiking trails for all experience and difficulty levels. We have several short hikes with great views and many long more enduring hiking trails. Here are some of the hiking opportunities available in our neck of the woods.

The Appalachian Trail

This world famous 2,100 mile trail runs through our county with several good access points. It runs along Holston Mountain overlooking beautiful Shady Valley and then meanders along Watauga Lake crossing right over Watauga Dam.

Cross Mountain Trail

This is a really cool hiking trail that is an easy short hike with incredible views making it perfect for beginning hikers.  It is a trail that connects Iron Mountain with Holston Mountain and is actually a section of the Appalachian Trail.

Doe Mountain Wilderness Area

The protected Doe Mountain Recreation Area consists of over 8,600 acres of mountain terrain. It is a family friendly wilderness area that has   ATV trails, hiking trails and mountain biking trails. The mountain range runs from Mountain City to Watauga Lake. Our creek side Log Cabins are located at the base of Doe Mountain on the Watauga Lake side.

Laurel Falls Trail

A great nearby hiking trail is the Laurel Falls Trail which can be entered either from below or above the incredible Laurel Falls, which is probably the most popular and the most spectacular waterfall in North East Tennessee.  This trail is lined with mountain laurel and is considered moderate in difficulty. The view of the waterfalls is definitely worth the hike. All of our cabins are within 30 minutes of this popular trail. Check it out on Face Book.

Laurel Creek Trail

Laurel Creek Trail is a scenic wildlife rich haven located in the Cherokee National Forest is near Laurel Bloomery, Tennessee. This trail is good for all skill levels and is primarily used for hiking, walking, nature trips and birding. It is short drive from our vacation rentals to this Trail Head.

Gentry Creek Falls

Gentry Creek Falls is a 4.5 mile back trail located near Laurel Bloomery, Tennessee that features a really nice waterfall and is rated as a moderate skill level. The trail crosses Gentry Creek about 14 times. Gentry Falls is a double waterfall in a remote forest setting. It is a short drive from our Log Cabin Homes.

Blue Hole

This is a short hike with great views of the “Blue Hole” waterfalls, which is actually a series of four separate waterfalls located very close to each other. The most dramatic waterfall is the third series of waterfalls, since you are actually looking into the “Blue Hole”. There are also some great rock bluffs that surround the waterfalls at the bottom. There are three ways to approach the waterfalls from the parking lot, based on if you want to view the upper, middle or lower falls. All trails leading to the waterfalls are rated as an easy level hike. All of our Log Cabins are within an hours drive. The Blue Hole is definitely worth the drive and the short hike.

Biking

There is some great on road and off road biking adventures available in Johnson County, Tennessee.  For some casual on road biking opportunities, you may consider riding the roads surrounding pristine Watauga Lake. For a more challenging adventure, you may wish to ascend to Cross Mountain or for an exciting downhill ride you may wish to descend from Cross Mountain. Cross Mountain Road connects with Hwy 67 in Doe Valley, which runs between Mountain City and Butler Tennessee. This is right down the road from our water front Log Cabins located on Doe Creek.


Fishing

Our local area offers some of the best fishing in North East Tennessee. There are many small creeks offering some great fishing from shorelines or some good wading opportunities.  Our creek side Log Cabins are situated directly on a secluded area of Doe Creek where fish flourish. This section of Doe Creek is also stocked three times yearly.  Watauga Lake offers excellent boat fishing on the lake and great shoreline fishing from some easy to access areas along the lake. Our lakefront Log Cabins with private docks provide great boat fishing opportunities and fishing right off the docks. Whether you are an avid fishing person or a novice, you will love the great fishing possibilities.


Water Sports

Watauga Lake offers all types of water sports. From motor boats for cruising and skiing, to wave runners and jet skis, to kayaks and canoes for  paddling, to paddle boards , to paragliding, you have available some of the best opportunities to enjoy the third cleanest lake in America. If you are a guest in one of our Log Cabin vacation rentals, you either have a private dock available to you or access to our private dock to enjoy this beautiful lake.


White Water Rafting

Watauga River offers some easy to moderate white water rafting and kayaking. The trips start at Wilbur Dam and flow all the way to Elizabethton, Tennessee.  These exciting adventures are located nearby and offer some great family fun.


ATV Touring

Doe Mountain Wilderness Area has 8,600 acres of protected mountain terrain and has some great ATV trails for your enjoyment. These trails are designed for a family friendly experience with safety being paramount. It is great place to learn to ride and to share an adventure that the family can do together. Our creek side log cabins are located at the base of this beautiful mountain. So if you are looking for an ATV adventure, we are the perfect location for your base camp.
