Northeast TN Attractions

There are some incredible Attractions located in our area. We have two exceptional History Museums, a theatre presenting top notch plays and musical events, historical sites, wilderness areas, ecoagricultural locations such as a first class winery and an organic farm & music venue, the third cleanest lake in America, a protected 8,600 acre wilderness area, and one of the best motorcycle routes in the country.

Welcome Center and History Museum

Our welcome center is located in Mountain City and houses a great historical museum depicting the local heritage of Johnson County. Here you will learn about the ways of our historical rural life and rich musical history. To take a step back in time, be sure to visit this unique museum.

Butler Museum

This is a very unique museum that explores the relocation of the town of Butler making way for the creation of Watauga Lake. You will not believe the displays in this small town museum. Tours are available by appointments throughout the summer season. It is worth taking the time to visit this attraction.

Heritage Hall

This theatre is located in a restored turn of the century building and offers first quality theatrical productions and musical events. Be sure to check out their calendar of events to see what is happening during your vacation visit.

Trade Grist Mill

If you like to tour historical sites, you should take time during your vacation in our area, to tour this really cool Grist Mill located in nearby Trade Tennessee. It is a functional grist mill that portrays how flour and other farm products were produced. The kids will love to see this attraction. Check this out on Face Book.

Watauga Lake Winery

Our area is fortunate to have a first class mountain winery, which is right near Watauga Lake. It is a great place to tour, have some food, enjoy events and drink some excellent wine. If you like to tour wineries put this on your schedule when you visit our area.

Appalachian Trail

The infamous 2,100 mile Appalachian Trail meanders through our area offering some of the best hiking in the world. Here you will experience incredible views and challenging back packing. This trail will take you along mountain ridges overlooking beautiful Shady Valley, around pristine Watauga Lake where you will actually walk across Watauga Dam and by incredible Laurel Falls. If you like to hike, you need to check out our section of this 2100 mile hiking trail.

Doe Mountain

This Family Wilderness Area has 8,600 acres of unexplored mountain terrain and offers ATV Trails, Hiking Trails and Mountain Biking Trails. This is a must visit attraction when you come to our area.

Harbin Hills Farm

This is a functioning farm specializing in organic grown produce which can be purchased directly from the onsite store. Be sure to check out their calendar of events, since they showcase some great local musicians on a regular basis during the summer season.

The Snake 421 Motorcycle Route

If you are a motorcycle rider you have probably heard about this famous motorcycle ride that offers some of the best riding in America. Enjoy this challenging route which will take you over a winding mountain ridge, through a wide open valley, a peaceful National Forest, along a meandering creek and through some beautiful mountain farmland.

Watauga Lake

This large pristine lake is one of the cleanest lakes in the United States. The vast majority of the 110 miles of shoreline is protected so there is limited development and incredible beauty. The lake offers some great motorboat water sports, fishing, paddling and pontoon boat touring. For a true mountain experience, be sure to take time to visit and play on this beautiful lake.
